Encouraging You on How to Overcome Fear

Fear is a strong emotion that has the power to destroy and overwhelm the soul.
It is so powerful that it can bring the mightiest and strongest person to their knees.
And it is because of this power that I want to address this emotion with you today.
And share with you how to overcome fear.
To encourage you to walk boldly out of fear’s grasp.
And to become fearless in a world where fear is stealing the most wonderous and joyful life.
It is time to take back that life and to press into true happiness.
To be transformed on the inside so that fear can’t take hold of your heart anymore.
If you deal with fear or have dealt with fear, then this is for you.
Before I can delve into how to overcome fear, I must tell you the ugly truth.
Recently, my life has taken a turn.
It wasn’t something that crept up on me all of a sudden.
It was a progression of things that finally gripped my heart so firmly that I felt I would die.
But it wasn’t until I stepped back that I could see it for what it was. It was fear!

Not just any fear like the fear of heights or snakes.
But an inward fear that has a specific name.
For me, I’ve dealt with the “fear of not being good enough.”
There I said it.
Giving it a name is empowering because it has plagued me most of my adult life.
And for some, there can be a different name to put after the words, “I am afraid of ____________________.”
Add your own title to your fear.
No matter what kind of fear it is, the same principles can be applied to them all.
The definition of fear can be explained by this simple play with words.
FEAR
F – False E- Evidence A – Appearing R- Real
Have you heard of that before?
I heard this from a professor in college.
Whatever fear you’re dealing with, no matter how intense the emotion is, it is not real.
This definition of fear brings a perspective that helps to see it for what it is.
It is fake!
It appears to be real, but when the dust is settled and anxiety is gone, what is left is the simple truth that fear has no hold on us.
Several pastors, including my dad, have shared an insight to make sense of this frozen state of fear.

“Fear can only exist when we agree with it.”
When we agree with what is plaguing our minds about ourselves, it gives it more power.
It becomes so large and can surmount into something so big that while in it, there seems no way out.
Anxiety is a friend to fear.
It grips the heart and twists it for days.
It’s like being overwhelmed by a sea of loathing, resentment, hurt, anguish, and so many negative feelings it is hard to get out from under it.
At the moment, it seems so real.
Nothing can console the heart when in it.
It is like a thief.
Days and weeks can be overtaken by grips of fear and anxiety.
I know this to be true because I’ve lived in its wake.
But now, let’s turn this boat around.
I’m tired of living here. Are you?
No matter what kind of fear you deal with, let’s face it. It is a lie!
What a relief!
When all of the inward accusations, fear-mongering thoughts, and self-loathing settles, you are left to either continue to believe it is true or FINALLY step out of this roller coaster onto secure ground.
Which are you willing to believe?
If no one else needs this pep talk, I am preaching to myself.
I am willing to believe that all of the evil voices inside my head speaking death to my soul are lies!
To believe that I am not all the things that fear wants me to believe.
That my purpose in life is not in who I am but in who God is!
And who He is is beautiful, gracious, and kind.
He never leaves me nor forsakes me.
He is my shelter in the storm.
His peace overwhelms my heart because He sees the good in me, and whispers another word over me.

He calls me beloved.
I am His, and He is mine.
No matter what life brings, I am in good hands.
To never forget the crushing blow Jesus took on my behalf so that when fear tries to overtake me, I will not fall under its power.
That’s truly why I can overcome fear.
How can I tell you how I overcame it unless I bring God into the picture?
How often do we hear our leadership say, please pray for so and so?
It’s because, inside us, we know there is a greater force in this world than our own.
And we are weak within ourselves to get out of life’s circumstances without help from God.
We all have things we are going through.
Fear may be my current situation. But it could be health issues or financial.
No matter where our life leads us, we can be assured that God will help us through.
This is how I overcame fear.
It’s to believe the truth that God is true and every man a liar! Found in the bible, Roman 3:4
And those voices in my head trying to weigh me down with fear are a bunch of lies.
So together, let’s stand up.
If fear has had a grip on your heart as it has mine, then together, let’s make today the day we walk out of this mountain of anxiety and fear and believe the truth that God speaks over us.
Let me encourage you with this scripture. It says it better than I can.

Romans 8:31-39
“If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: “For your sake, we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” [j]
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[k] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Let’s let this truth sink in! If God is for us then who can be against us?
No one!
So, I put before you a way out of fear.
And with boldness and confidence, we can live a fearless life!
It is possible to be happy and joyous about life’s treasures again and live free!
Freedom to live without fear is a gift! And I want to share this gift with you.
We can be free today and walk fearlessly!
Isn’t that something to celebrate? I love that so much!
I leave you with this simple prayer to overcome fear.

Father,
I pray over every heart that is filled with fear to be healed, in Jesus name.
We cast off all of our fear and trust and believe what you say. That fear has no hold on us. And fear is a liar.
Help us to walk out this truth today.
In Jesus name, Amen.
Today, I pray these words that were inspired by God to permiate your heart today.
This is a simple but powerful message that can help us to know how to overcome fear.
