The Victorian Farmhouse style is beloved for its simple elegance.

Painted white walls with old mahogany antique wood pieces of furniture are breathtaking.

When these two styles come together, it creates a sophisticated and casual home.

Back in the day Victorians decorated with ornate, heavy furniture, velvet, lace, chunky frames, and wool rugs.

While the farmhouse era was rustic with chippy paint, light, airy curtains, dainty floral fabrics, and cast iron sinks.

By marrying the two together, it creates a beautiful, unique home that is cozy with a style of its own.

Let’s explore some tips on how to combine the Victorian & Farmhouse style when decorating.

Tip #1: Picking the right colors.

When picking colors for your home, these two styles can collide.

The Victorians liked dark burgundy, green, and gold.

While the farmhouse-style colors are sage green, pink, yellow, and white, for example.

To get the Victorian Farmhouse style, you will pull from each one to create a color palette that is uniquely your own.

No matter which way you choose, whether it’s dark or light colors, the secret to a successful result in the colors for your home is to let these play off each other.

As I described at the beginning, the white-painted walls complement old dark mahogany pieces of furniture.

The opposite would be to combine dark grey walls with white chipped painted farmhouse-style furniture, for example.

Using light colors to let the dark furniture pop. Or using dark colors to let the light-colored furniture pop.

There is a wow factor when going into a home and seeing the striking comparison that plays a part in creating a modern Victorian Farmhouse look.

Not only with furniture but with every aspect of home decorating.

It can reflect in simple things like hand towels in the bathroom. Crisp white ones against a sage green painted wall is a statement.

When painting walls or decorating, using dark and light colors against each other gives a pop to your home.

It is a subtle trick that uses color to bring out the best of what you have.

Now, you know this trick, too.

There has been a trend I have seen on Pinterest where charcoal grey walls, even black, are having a moment.

This may not be for everyone.

When paired with crisp white baseboards. This combo is dramatic!

Then there’s the opposite.

White painted walls.

It has a vintage feel that is attractive to both the farmhouse and Victorian styles.

This is why this color is perfect for a Victorian Farmhouse look.

It is a stand-alone color for the refreshing ambiance that it creates in a space.

The colors of the Victorian Farmhouse decorating style can be whatever you enjoy.

For inspiration, here are some color ideas for the Victorian Farmhouse style.

• Burgundy, white and sage green.
• Light grey, royal blue, and white.
• Hunter green, yellow, and off-white.
• Gold, antique blue, and creamy white or off-white.
• Or all white. Including white-painted furniture, white slipcovers, white rugs, and white frames. For example.

And gives the needed contrast to enhance the beautiful features you’ve incorporated, be it damask patterned pillows or velvet green curtains, for example.

White has the power to calm a room, all the while giving way to creativity when adding bright colors to a design.

Now onto another tip on how to combine the Victorian & Farmhouse style when decorating.

Tip #2: Picking the right furniture.

This is where the Victorian Farmhouse style comes in.

You will give your home distinction by designing with a mixture of refinement and comfort.

For example, having one Victorian chair in a room is a statement in itself.

Here is a photo below where I incorporated a Victorian chair.

And sitting on it is our one-year-old Maine Coon cat, Winston.

He loves it, too.

Victorian Farmhouse style integrates vintage antiques.

But this is not a requirement.

While sitting on a Victorian sofa watching “Downton Abbey” seems ideal.

It isn’t always a comfortable choice.

What makes a home feel vintage is the decor and wall art. Antiques are accents.

Of course, with some persistence, it is possible to find a cozy, soft, cushioned antique sofa.

That would be a score!

But a cozy Ektorp sofa from Ikea or the Pottery Barn basic sofa, for example, has a modern traditional look.

And that’s ok.

It’s the cozy Victorian needlepoint pillow and the chunky farmhouse knitted blanket that’s added to a modern sofa that gives it a vintage vibe.

Victorian Farmhouse style incorporates the modern, too.

And that’s the beauty of it.

What to look for when picking out furniture.

The #1 tip is to find white, tan, or light grey colored fabric for sofas and chairs.

Ideally, white is the best choice since it’s the backdrop for all decor.

If you have children, tan and light grey is a good choice, too.

Although, white is easy to clean if the sofa has a slipcover.

Having a neutral color for these pieces of furniture is to allow the wood antiques, colorful pillows, and blankets to be the show stoppers.

Plus, this will allow for seasonal changes as the neutral will never compete with new colors added.

Combining white-painted furniture with wood furniture is ok.

The Victorian Farmhouse style is a unique design that doesn’t have restrictions on combining painted furniture with wood furniture.

The beauty is in the details of the piece.

Like the sofa in the photo above.

I painted the fabric with Annie Sloan chalk paint in color Paris Grey.

And the wood was painted with Annie Sloan chalk paint in the color Old White.

The industrial farmhouse stool has a dark wood seat with a black iron base. The two together complement each other.

The stool pops against the lighter color of the antique sofa.

Again, color plays a big part when decorating. This includes furniture.

Now for tip #3: Picking the right home accents.

This is the fun part!

You now have a color scheme.

And you have the furniture.

Now, let’s get to adding the decor.

In the photo above, my guest bathroom is an example of how to add the two styles.

The farmhouse-style cabinets (two stacked on each other, video sharing these finds) with a Victorian-style crystal vase filled with colorful summer flowers go well together. Don’t you think?

A small white porcelain knick-knack with pink, purple, and yellow flowers sits on the top of the cabinet.

I received an old antique from my Great Aunt June as a gift a few years ago.

Taking the colors from the knick-knack, I put together a bouquet with similar colors.

The two, when added together, have given this small guest bathroom the perfect sweet vintage vibe.

I have this shelf on my bathroom wall (in the photo below).

I placed a farmhouse-style metal balancing scale with two toilet paper rolls on top.

On the right, I have a white pitcher filled with summer flowers in the same purple and pink as the flowers on the bathroom counter.

The oval frame has a Victorian look with dried flowers inside.

These are simple touches that give it a Victorian Farmhouse look.

Another example of how to combine the Victorian Farmhouse style is with accents.

In the photo above, I found a large Victorian-style fireplace mantle for $40 on Craigslist.

I painted it with Annie Sloan chalk paint in the color Old White.

It sits atop an Industrial Farmhouse black iron and dark wood console.

The tall grey candlestick on the left has a Victorian vibe with an ornate design.

The large white Pfaltzgraff platter in the center is farmhouse-style.

Underneath is a shelf similar to the console with an Industrial Farmhouse look.

The books and other pieces are vintage-looking, too.

Altogether this is what defines this style.

The classic Victorian Farmhouse decor has taken on a life of its own.

It is a simple elegance that brings comfort and beauty together.

To create a cozy home that will grow with continual additions.

Over time, as all the pieces fall into place, this will be a sanctuary that says, welcome home.

That is the draw to filling our homes with such beauty.

We want our sanctuary.
